Project Athena - Day 300 (Words)

Just Create

Wow, can you believe it's day 300?  A nice soft, pat on the back to me and to all my followers out there in cyber land. This feels like a landmark and truly the beginning of the home stretch on Project Athena.

Sadly, I didn't shoot today. I pulled this photo from my archives because...while I am having a slightly better day with this painful back flare up, I am taking it easy and riding this one out at home. I remember when I shot this picture last summer though as I drove through the parking lot of the Fort Collins Senior Center. I remember thinking that whoever made these colorful banners with the inspiring messages was a lucky sign company and that I am blessed to live in a city where seniors are honored and considered vital contributors to the community.

Project Athena - Day 276 (Fences)

Distortion Becomes Reality

After hearing the news in the headlines yesterday about the 47 GOP senators who sent a letter to the Iranian leadership in an effort to undermine the nuclear arms negotiations that are currently underway, I felt it my civic duty to send my own letter. So far, no response from Mr. Gardner except to say he is a very busy man. I bet he is especially busy today. Tonight, you get a glimpse into some of my political views.

Dear Senator Gardner,
I find your participation in the letter sent to the Iranian government deplorable! Not only have you undermined the negotiations that are an effort to prevent an all out war, you have disrespected the office of the presidency and Mr. Obama himself. You, along with your other republican friends, have sunk to an all time low by ignoring the possible global repercussions this will have on our already fragile foreign policy and our world image as a united nation. You also ignorantly turned a blind eye to the fact that any agreement made with Iran and the other nations involved will, in fact, become a legal and binding contract, despite your personal agenda. The People of America elected Mr. Obama to be our spokesperson on foreign policy and even if you do not agree with him, he is the person who has been selected for this job. Your job is to support him during these delicate negotiations and hopefully work to make our domestic policy better for all citizens.

It's clear to me that you acted recklessly and are completely out of touch with the people of Colorado that you represent. Unfortunately, I doubt there will be any consequence for you and your colleagues for this outrageous behavior although I do believe there are grounds for prosecution under the Logan Act. The very least you could do is publically apologize to the President and the American people for taking part in what some, including myself, are considering a treasonous act.

Your very disappointed constituent,
Lori Beaty

Project Athena - Day 241 (Benches, Seats, Chairs)

Center Stage

Center Stage, in Evergreen, CO has become one of my favorite performing arts venues because it has been truly the second home for my Mother-in-law and Father-in-law over the last 20 years. Since I have been a part of the Sohrweid family, I have attended many of the quality concerts, plays and celebrations that have taken place in this little community theater and been thoroughly entertained.

I shot this photo in May of last year knowing I had the seats theme on my list. It's one of the few times that small auditorium was empty as the full house that attended the show that night was in the intimate front lobby celebrating the retirement of Elaine Sohrwied,  director of the Evergreen's Children Chorale for 19 years. It was a wonderful celebration and much deserved tribute to her unwavering dedication, musical talent and amazing creative spirit. She has touched the lives of literally thousands of children over the years and her positive influence inspires me to dream big.

Project Athena - Day 209 (Winter)

Blue Icicle Towers

This summer, I visited the Chihuly glass art exhibit at the Denver Botanic Gardens on several occasions and this spectacular piece that greeted visitors at the entrance was truly one of my favorites. 650 glass “icicles” dazzled the sky, both day and night.

I chose to share this as a winter photo, even though it was taken in August, because I love the cool winter colors and the glossy, smooth surfaces juxtapose to needle sharp spikes. It represents the winter season perfectly. Enjoy.
