Project Athena - Day 319 (Wood)

The Textures of Life

Texture is a wonderful metaphor for the story of one's life or personality. Smooth, rough, grainy, warped, hard, lumpy, mushy, prickly, resilient, rubbery, sharp, glassy, silky, sandy, slick, soft, velvety, dimpled, greasy, rigid etc. I have been many textures over the years. These days I  feel a bit mushy but resilient.

Knock on Wood

I don't know where this idiom comes from but of all the superstitions out there, I actually like to knock on wood when I want my luck or a good situation to continue. It feels like the right thing to do. So, with 48 days left to shoot and post, I am gonna knock on some wood right now and see myself completing this project and nailing some outstanding shots. Pun Intended.

Yard Art

Once you make a decision, the universe conspires to make it happen.
— Ralph Waldo Emerson

I photographed this cross section of a tree trunk back in 2007 when it had just been freshly cut. Back then, the lumber was unsoiled and it still had the rich, earthy aroma of a fine wood.

That old photo has served as the texture and pattern in a number of my digital mandala creations. Today, I decided to reshoot this aged piece of wood that has weathered many a storm. in the elements as yard art. The concentric rings are becoming more distinctive and the cracks are more pronounced. It's still beautiful and full of wisdom.
