Project Athena - Day 294 (Bridges)

Now That's a Bridge

Several years ago, Lara and I took a wonderful Colorado road trip to celebrate our 10th anniversary. We didn't really plan where we would go, we just got in the car and drove. We saw some amazing scenery along the way and this was one place we stopped so I could photograph this awesome arch bridge, near Leadville, CO. At the time, I did not know it is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. I just knew it was a photo opportunity that would not come again for a long while.

I am pulling it from the archives today because I love this picture and also I have run out of cool looking bridges found in northern Colorado. Hope you enjoy.

Project Athena - Day 84 (Barns)

Bobcat Ridge Natural Area

The buildings tell the story of pioneer settlement, farming, and cattle ranching dating from the 1880’s through the late 20th century.
— Bobcat Ridge Natural Area Brochure

Today sadly concludes the theme of barns for me. It was a truly a wonderful week of shooting as I met the friendliest people along the way and discovered an amazingly rich farm heritage that made this place I call home.

I couldn't decide which picture to post today so like a Fourth of July fireworks display, the grand finale is a collage of photos from the beautiful historic farm at Bobcat Ridge.

Discovering this natural area today was such a delightful treat. Strolling around the property, I realized there is a lot to look at and photograph as the preservation of the structures is phenomenal. I am looking forward to revisiting for another shoot, hopefully when the sunshine returns, as well as taking a hike on the trail.

Project Athena - Day 79 (Barns)

Osborn Farmstead Barn

When I started this theme, I had know idea where it would lead me or who I would meet along the way. As it turns out, I am discovering some very cool historical barns that reflect the heart and soul that is Northern Colorado and some amazing people who are admirably dedicated to preserving the rich farming heritage history of this Northern Colorado area.

Timberlane Farm Museum is a quaint museum and working farm in Loveland. The staff is extremely knowledgeable about the history of the Osborn family, who homesteaded this property back in 1860 and have passed it down through the generations. A free tour of the property includes walking through the two beautifully restored and historically furnished homes of the Osborn family as well as seeing various workshops with their old tools. You can also interact with some lively farm animals and walk through the two story, gambrel-roofed, two story barn Check out their website here. http://www.timberlanefarmmuseum.org

I am beginning to understand what the barn symbolizes for me and why the fascination with photographing them, especially historical barns. It is metaphor for community and connection. It represents the healthy achievement of people who share a mutual goal that weathers the test of time. Smiling.

Big Red Barn

There is something about the old barns that leaves me feeling wistful....and smiling.
— Me

This historical, big red barn that sits on Taft Hill Road is a wonderful Fort Collins landmark. It is part of the historical Mead family farmstead that has recently been brought back to life as Spring Kite Farm. http://www.springkitefarm.com

This is one  of my favorite barns in the area and my eyes are drawn to the contrasting brilliant red colors outlined in bright white every time I pass by it. While I have gazed upon this barn literally thousands of times, It wasn't until today that I noticed the amusing crooked window in the peak.

This experience of photographing everyday continues to bless my life and my change my perceptions of the world around me. Deep appreciation is here for the way Spirit is "upgrading my program" so to speak.
