Project Athena - Day 45 (Old Technology)

Cha-Ching...

The sound of a cash register”
”The sound that plays in your mind when you get your check”
”An expression used to show excitement after something good has happened”
”An enthusiastic expression when you get money you did not do much to earn, or found money”
”Slang for “time to cash in””
Wow, I did not know cha-ching meant that. You will have to look that one up yourself.
”The act of overcharging for a product or service
— Urban Dictionary

Can I just say Thank You Athena!! I have been trying to get this shot for over a month now and there had been one thing or another that prevented it from happening. Tonight, I just listened and was shown how to make it happen.

Get Your Small Wavy Groove On

Vinyl is the real deal. I’ve always felt like, until you buy the vinyl record, you don’t really own the album. And it’s not just me or a little pet thing or some kind of retro romantic thing from the past. It is still alive.
— Jack White

It is rumored that even Steve Jobs preferred listening to vinyl over a digital mp3 on an ipod. I can certainly understand why. Vinyl is imperfect. Its like the difference between a digital picture and a photo produced from film. Vinyl records are always shy of that "perfect" sound and yet contain a richness and depth not found in digital downloads. A well pressed record is a thing of beauty and an amazing art!

I recall the days of being completely immersed in the listening experience of a vinyl record...pulling the black beauty from its sleeve, wiping it carefully with a plush velvet pad before setting it on the turn table with Side A facing up, lifting the needle ever so carefully and placing it gently over the beginning of the album before lowering the lever to hear that  hiss of the first rotation before the music began.

The music would start and I would sit back with the album cover, causally studying the amazing illustrated artwork indicative of the album's theme. I would listen to the entire album without skipping around or jumping tracks. Every play of the album was unique with different pops and crackles, evoking different emotions. Some days I would dance. Some days I would close my eyes and just listen. Always I would smile.

Vintage Fuji Film Birdie Projector

Some choices we live not only once but a thousand times over, remembering them for the rest of our lives.
— Richard Bach

I don't know how old this projector really is but I thought it was prehistoric when it was thoughtfully passed down to me by my parents at very young age of 18.

Go Fuji Film! It still works! I know what my next camera will be!

When I first started taking pictures back in 1978 with that Pentax MX camera you see in my hands on the projection screen, slide film was my choice for color photography and I used this little piece of technology on a daily basis to show off my work. This self-contained, carry-anywhere unit was my way of blogging back then.

This week is gonna be so much fun shooting old technology. Hope you come along and travel into the past with me.

Smiling then, smiling now.
